Dozens killed, injured in Venezuela refinery blast
“People are very scared.” An explosion at the Amuay oil refinery in northwestern Venezuela has led to the deaths of at least 24 people (including a 10-year-old boy), along with reports of as many as 82 hospitalizations. “They evacuated the areas that had to be evacuated, but the situation, as the technicians are telling within the refinery, is controlled,” according to Falcon State Gov. Stella Lugo. The refinery is one of the world’s largest, handling 900,000 barrels of oil per day. Rafael Ramírez, who leads Pdvsa (the state-owned oil company that runs the refinery), says the explosion was caused by a gas leak.
